Senses & Materials Workshop with -Urbanberry Design, Yukiko Nezu
Senses & Materials-Urbanberry Design, Yukiko Nezu
Workshop: 23-24 November 2024
Sat- Sun 10:00am- 16:00pm
Each material has its own unique behaviour. Finding their characteristics and creating designs that make the most of them is one of the most exciting aspects of design. What paper can do, what wood can do, what string can do - the advantages and functions of each are almost certain.
The workshop will focus on the natural material reed. Reeds have long been used as a roofing material because they are light, hold water and dry quickly. In addition to reeds, other plant materials such as straw and grass have been processed into a variety of products for daily use. The first two lectures will teach the characteristics of the materials. The first is a lecture on the material and its behaviour, followed by a lecture on thatching by a thatching expert. In two days, we spent making potholder and indoor partitions out of reeds.

Back to the drawing floor
An exhibition which came out of a collaboration of various teachers and makers who all visited an old horse carriage house named The Moraine close by Nijmegen, in Beek.
Since the old carriage was missing, we wondered: How could we rethink the idea of the horse carriage? We shared reflections on the past, present and future.
Take time to go back to the metaphorical “drawing table” of how our cities, societies and landscapes are designed. You are invited to stop your motion, sit and sketch, which will be documented in a stop motion video. In the building of The Moraine there was an old paper roll which was hidden and we gave it a new life. So come and sketch and draw with natural pigments (developed by Marloes Meijburg) and charcoal (during a workshop with Rakesh Rootsmanrak.
